An Air Arabia Egypt Airbus A320-200, registration SU-AAB performing flight E5-337 from Alexandria Borg (Egypt) to Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) with 120 people on board, was climbing out of Alexandria when the crew stopped the climb at FL110 reporting the gear doors did not close after departure and decided to divert to Cairo (Egypt) where the aircraft landed safely on runway 05C about 50 minutes after departure from Alexandria.

A replacement Air Arabia A320-200 registration A6-AOD was dispatched to Cairo, resumed the flight and reached Riyadh with a delay of 7.5 hours.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Cairo about 35 hours after landing.

Cairo airport sources had reported the aircraft diverted with problems with one of the engines (CFM56).

A native Arabic speaker advised The Aviation Herald on Jul 2nd 2016, that the crew, other than originally reported, did not report an engine problem during their Arabic exchange with Cairo's Air Traffic Control, but advised that the gear doors had remained open after gear retraction, gear operation otherwise was normal.
