An Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-900, registration N431AS performing flight AS-686 from Portland,OR to Chicago,IL (USA), departed Portland's runway 28L, however, the tail contacted the runway surface during departure. The crew stopped the climb at about 13,000 feet and returned to Portland for a safe landing on runway 28L about 30 minutes after departure.

The FAA reported the aircraft received minor damage when it scraped its tail on the runway during departure. The aircraft returned to Portland.

The aircraft remained on the ground for about 5 hours, then departed again and reached Chicago with a delay of 5.5 hours.
