A Mount Cook Airlines Avions de Transport Regional ATR-72-212A on behalf of Air New Zealand, registration ZK-MVE performing flight NZ-5313/NM-313 from Wellington to Christchurch (New Zealand) with 65 people on board, was climbing through 9000 feet out of Wellington when the crew stopped the climb and decided to return to Wellington due to a chlorine odour in the cabin causing a number of passengers to feel unwell. The aircraft landed safely back in Wellington about 20 minutes after departure. The passengers feeling unwell were treated at the airport.

It was subsequently discovered that a passenger had carried a bottle of bleach in his carry on stowed in the overhead lockers. The bottle leaked into the overhead locker causing the fumes.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Wellington about 17 hours after landing back.
