A Mount Cook Airlines Avions de Transport Regional ATR-72-212A on behalf of Air New Zealand, registration ZK-MVE performing flight NZ-5308 from Christchurch to Hamilton (New Zealand) with 58 people on board, was enroute at FL170 about 20nm southeast of Nelson (New Zealand) when the crew reported smoke in the cockpit and diverted to Nelson for a safe landing on runway 02 about 10 minutes later.

A passenger reported an odour of burning rubber and haze developed on board. After the landing the captain announced there had been an electrical malfunction.

The airline confirmed the aircraft diverted because haze developed on board.

The occurrence aircraft positioned back to Christchurch departing Nelson after about 4.5 hours on the ground and resumed service about 17 hours after landing in Nelson.
