An Allegiant McDonnell Douglas MD-82, registration N426NV performing flight G4-822 from Saint Petersburg,FL to Elmira,NY (USA), was climbing through 10,000 feet when the crew stopped the climb and decided to return to Saint Petersburg, however, without advising of a reason and without declaring emergency. The aircraft was on a downwind for runway 18 when the crew requested some delay vectors advising flight attendants were still working on a lavatory. While on delay vectors ATC advised that they had now discovered foreign objects on the runway and were attempting to collect the objects as quickly as possible, an operations vehicle was dispatched onto the runway, the aircraft was instructed to fly further to the north. While the operations vehicle was on the way onto the runway tower vectored the aircraft back onto final approach, the vehicle did not clear the runway in time, the aircraft therefore went around, positioned for another approach to runway 18 and landed safely on runway 18 about 20 minutes after departure.

A replacement MD-83 registration N872GA reached Elmira with a delay of 4 hours.

The FAA confirmed the aircraft returned, the pilots did not report the reason for the return.

Passengers reported shortly after becoming airborne there were alarm sounds and alarm lights. Cabin crew advised that there might be an evacuation after landing.
