A KLM Boeing 747-400, registration PH-BFB performing flight KL-601 from Amsterdam (Netherlands) to Los Angeles,CA (USA), was in the initial climb out of Amsterdam's runway 36L when the crew reported they had received a bird strike just prior to rotation. In the absence of abnormal indications the crew decided to continue the flight and was enroute at FL320 about 40nm northnorthwest of Norwich,EN (UK) when the crew decided to abort the flight and to return to Amsterdam, dumped fuel over the North Sea at FL250 and landed safely back on Amsterdam's runway 36R about 90 minutes after departure.

A replacement Boeing 747-400 registration PH-BFG departed Amsterdam about 3 hours after landing of PH-BFB and is estimated to reach Los Angeles with a delay of 4.5 hours.

The airline reported the aircraft ingested a bird into one of its engines (CF6) and returned to Amsterdam as a precaution according to standard operating procedures.
