A United Boeing 777-200, registration N218UA performing flight UA-872 from Taipei (Taiwan) to San Francisco,CA (USA), was enroute at FL340 over the Pacific Ocean about 1270nm southsouthwest of Anchorage,AK (USA) when the left hand engine (PW4090) suffered severe vibrations prompting the crew to reduce engine thrust. The aircraft drifted down to FL220 and diverted to Anchorage for a safe landing on runway 07R about 3.5 hours later.

Passengers described that the left hand engine attempted to shake itsself apart and loose of the left hand wing, lavatories were rattling, any loose items on trays and floor started to move around. About one hour later the crew announced that they had consulted with company maintenance, engine power had been reduced, they had descended and were diverting to Anchorage as a precaution. Passengers reported that the vibrations increased again during the approach to Anchorage, but did not become as severe as over the Ocean.

A replacement Boeing 777-200 registration N224UA was dispatched from San Francisco to Anchorage as flgiht UA-2121, resumed the flight about 10 hours after N218UA landed in Anchorage and reached San Francisco with a delay of 11.5 hours.
