A United Boeing 767-400, registration N69059 performing flight UA-385 from Newark,NJ (USA) to Dubrovnik (Croatia), was climbing out of Newark when the crew stopped the climb at FL250 with a block altitude clearance FL240-FL260. The crew queried ATC what altitude they were showing, the controller responded they were showing FL250. Some time later the crew announced after working their checklists, that they were no longer RVSM (reduced vertical separation minima) capable and needed to return to Newark. The aircraft landed safely back on Newark's runway 04R about 90 minutes after departure.

A replacement Boeing 767-400 registration N66051 reached Dubrovnik with a delay of about 7 hours.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Newark about 15 hours after landing back.
