A Condor Boeing 767-300, registration D-ABUB performing flight DE-2221 (callsign CFG221) from La Romana (Dominican Republic) to Frankfurt/Main (Germany), was climbing out of La Romana when the crew donned their oxygen masks, stopped the climb at 5000 feet reporting a strong odour on board and decided to return to La Romana. The aircraft entered a hold for about one hour, then positioned for a safe landing on runway 11 about 75 minutes after departure. During roll out the flight crew opened the cockpit windows and taxied to the apron with open cockpit windows.

The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground in La Romana until Mar 9th, then performed two test flights and resumed service on Mar 10th with flight DE-2221 from La Romana to Frankfurt.

The crew, after returning to Germany, went to a hospital for medical checks.

A Wamos Boeing 747-400 registration EC-MDS is currently positioning from Madrid,SP (Spain) to Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) with callsign CFG221T.

On Mar 10th 2016 Germany's BFU reported they are aware of the occurrence and are collecting data to decide whether the open an investigation.
