A United Boeing 757-300, registration N57857 performing flight UA-1470 from Newark,NJ (USA) to Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) with 213 people on board, was enroute at FL350 over the Atlantic Ocean about 280nm southsoutheast of Norfolk,VA (USA) when the crew needed to shut the right hand engine (RB211) down and to drift down. The crew decided to turn around and divert to Norfolk. The aircraft landed safely in Norfolk about one hour after leaving FL350.

The remainder of the flight was cancelled.
