Berlin A321 near Bordeaux on Dec 26th 2015, battery goes smoking

An Air Berlin Airbus A321-200, registration D-ABCA performing flight AB-2346 from Dusseldorf (Germany) to Las Palmas,CI (Spain), was enroute at FL330 about 100nm northwest of Bordeaux (France) when the smartphone external battery pack of a passenger being charged at the time began to emit smoke prompting the crew to discharge a fire extinguisher, cool the battery pack down and put it into a metal box while the flight crew diverted the aircraft to Bordeaux for a safe landing about 30 minutes later.

A replacement Airbus A321-200 registration D-ABCQ was dispatched to Bordeaux and reached Las Palmas with a delay of 6 hours.

The airline confirmed a passenger was charging his external smartphone battery pack, when the battery emitted smoke prompting cabin crew to discharge a Halon fire extinguisher and subsequently put the battery into a metal container, the battery was disposed of in Bordeaux. The charger was being used legally. The airline strongly advises passengers to always put such equipment into the hand luggage in order to detect possible smoke development in time, cabin crew are trained to deal with such a scenario.
