Canada Express CRJ2 at Newark on Dec 1st 2015, gear grinding noise, windshield heat failure, odour of smoke in cockpit

An Air Canada Express Canadair CRJ-200, registration C-GKEP performing flight QK-8497 from Newark,NJ (USA) to Montreal,QC (Canada), departed Newark's runway 04L when upon selecting the gear up loud grinding noise became audible in the cockpit, at the same time the right hand windshield heat indicator illuminated and the smell of smoke became noticeable in the cockpit. The crew declared emergency, stopped the climb at 4000 feet and returned to Newark for a safe landing on runway 04R about 10 minutes after departure.

The Canadian TSB reported emergency services met the aircraft. While taxiing in the crew turned hydraulic pump 3A off, the odour ceased. After the aircraft arrived at the gate and the passengers had disembarked the crew noticed that the air driven generator had deployed.

The aircraft remained on the ground for about 16 hours then positioned to Montreal. The aircraft resumed service about 42 hours after landing back in Newark.
