A Meridiana Boeing 737-300, registration EI-IGS performing flight IG-220 from Catania to Milan Linate (Italy) with 90 people on board, departed Catania's runway 08 and was in the initial climb when an outboard main wheel separated from landing gear and dropped onto the (empty) beach just past the runway. The crew stopped the climb and returned to Catania for a safe landing about 50 minutes after departure.

The airport was closed for about one hour as result of the occurrence.

Italy's ANSV rated the occurrence a serious incident, opened an investigation and dispatched an investigator on site.

The flight was cancelled, the passengers were rebooked onto the next flights.
