An Expressjet Embraer ERJ-145 on behalf of United, registration N27200 performing flight EV-3822/UA-3822 from Chicago O'Hare,IL to Erie,PA (USA) with 45 people on board, was climbing out of Chicago when the crew reported smoke in the cockpit, stopped the climb at 10,000 feet and decided to return to Chicago. The aircraft landed safely back on runway 27R about 11 minutes after departure.

A passenger reported there was a loud pop, then smoke and sparks came out of the aircraft ceiling. A flight attendant discharged a fire extinguisher into the aft ceiling.

The airline reported there was no fire. The passengers were taken to Erie on another aircraft.

A replacement Embraer ERJ-145 registration N14568 reached Erie with a delay of 100 minutes.
