A Passaredo Avions de Transport Regional ATR-72-212A, registration PP-PTM performing flight P3-2230 from Brasilia,DF to Barreiras,BA (Brazil) with 58 people on board, was climbing out of Brasilia when the crew was informed that a fairing had been found on the runway and possibly belong to their aircraft. The crew performed a visual check and was barely able to identify by an unusual bump on top of the engine that the outer fairing on their left hand engine (PW127) had been lost. The crew therefore initiated the return to Brasilia. While descending towards Brasilia the crew received a fire indication for the left hand engine with all other indications remaining normal, shut the engine down and discharged the fire agent. The aircraft landed safely back in Brasilia 30 minutes after departure. The aircraft vacated the runway and taxied to the apron, where passengers disembarked. Tyre #2 was found deflated.

The French BEA reported in their weekly bulletin, that an examination did not find any evidence of an engine fire, it is believed that the fire indication was triggered by the wiring breakage system damaged by the departing fairing. Brazil's CENIPA rated the occurrence a serious incident and opened an investigation.
