A Delta Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-88, registration N916DE performing flight DL-2225 from Providence,RI to Atlanta,GA (USA), rejected takeoff from runway 23 at very low speed due to the failure of the right hand engine (JT8D), that rolled back and lost power while accelerating to takeoff power. The aircfraft returned to the gate, the crew did not request assistance. The crew of the next departure requested a runway inspection to make sure no debris was left behind as result of the engine failure, the inspection did not find any debris.

The flight was cancelled.
