A Germanwings Airbus A319-100, registration D-AGWL performing flight 4U-887 from Rome Fiumicino (Italy) to Cologne/Bonn (Germany) with 121 people on board, was climbing through FL235 out of Rome when the crew stopped the climb reporting a smokey odour on board, performed a rapid descent to FL100 and diverted to Pisa (Italy), while emergency services and a number of ambulances took their stand by position in Pisa. The aircraft landed safely on runway 04R about 24 minutes later.

A passenger reported smelling no unusual odour on board, he noticed the aircraft stopped the climb and entered a rapid descent. There was just an announcement they would do an emergency landing in Pisa, an explanation would occur later. After landing the captain indicated there had been some odour on board and a number of occupants did not feel well. There were no injuries, nobody was taken to a hospital.

Italian Media reported the aircraft was invaded by black smoke.

The airline confirmed an unusual odour in cockpit and cabin, a number of passengers did not feel well. Neither passengers nor crew needed medical attention after landing however. The source of the fumes is now being investigated.

On Sep 22nd 2015 the French BEA reported in their weekly bulletin, that the fume event did not result in injuries, the occurrence has been rated a serious incident however and is being investigated by Germany's BFU.

On Feb 16th 2016 Germany's BFU reported in their September bulletin, that members of the crew observed adverse effects on their health, both pilots donned their oxygen masks and diverted to Pisa for a safety landing. The occurrence is being investigated by the BFU.
