A Germanwings Airbus A320-200, registration D-AIPZ performing flight 4U-686 from Cologne/Bonn (Germany) to Kavala (Greece) with 129 passengers, was climbing out of Cologne when the crew stopped the climb at FL250 reporting a smokey odour on board and decided to return to Cologne. During the approach the crew advised that the odour had dissipated. The aircraft landed safely on Cologne's runway 32R about 35 minutes after departure.

A replacement Airbus A320-200 registration D-AIQS reached Kavala with a delay of 6 hours.

The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground for about 6 hours, a representative of the BFU was on site, and resumed service afterwards.
