A Singapore Airlines Boeing 777-200, registration 9V-SVB performing flight SQ-391 from Istanbul (Turkey) to Singapore (Singapore) with 255 passengers and 14 crew, was climbing through 2000 feet out of Istanbul Ataturk's runway 35R when the aircraft flew through a flock of about 50-60 large birds and received multiple bird strikes into the radome and engines (Trent 800). The aircraft levelled off at 10,000 feet and returned to Istanbul for a safe landing on runway 35L about 40 minutes after departure. A number of birds had penetrated the radome with one bird embedded in the radome, there were dents visible on the leading edge of the inlet of the right hand engine.

The flight was cancelled.

The radome including parts of the weather radar needed to be replaced, the localizer antenna was replaced, engine #2 was replaced with evidence of bird ingestion into the core (no evidence of bird ingestion into the engine #1), both engine nose cowls replaced, a left hand underwing panel replaced and right hand stabilizer leading edge dents repaired. The aircraft was subsequently ferried to Singapore on Aug 24th 2015 for further maintenance.
