A United Boeing 737-800, registration N34282 performing flight UA-1742 from Orlando,FL to Los Angeles,CA (USA) with 151 passengers, was enroute at FL360 about 13nm southeast of Midland/Odessa Airport,TX when the crew initiated to divert to Midland/Odessa Airport due to a male diabetic passenger (49) who had become unresponsive and unconscious. A nurse on board and several fellow passengers provided first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The aircraft landed safely at Midland/Odessa Airport about 15 minutes later, the patient was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

The aircraft suffered a leaking brakes line and could not immediately continue the flight forcing the remainder of the flight to be postponed. The passengers were taken to the terminal.

The airline reported hotels were unavailable in the area of Midland/Odessa so that the passengers had to be taken to the terminals and were provided with meals, beverages, pillows and blankets.

The aircraft was repaired and was able to continue the flight as UA-1762 the following day and reached Los Angeles with a delay of 16 hours.

Passengers complained however about the airline being unattentative, not providing accomodation, not providing food for several hours until finally pizzas were delivered upon the personal initiative of a pair of fellow passengers.

The hospital reported the patient died in the morning of Jul 3rd.
