A United Boeing 777-200, registration N779UA performing flight UA-396 from Honolulu,HI to San Francisco,CA (USA) with 267 people on board, was enroute at FL380 about 240nm northeast of Honolulu about 30 minutes into the flight when the crew needed to shut the left hand engine (PW4077) down due to a fire indication, turn around to return to Honolulu drifting down to FL200 and landed safely back on Honolulu's runway 08L about 50 minutes later, vacated the runway and stopped clear of the runway. Attending emergency services reported the left engine and left side looked good, no fire, no smoke, no damage visible. The crew requested to be towed to the apron.

A passenger reported that there were two bumps, then sparks were visible from the left hand engine about an hour into the flight, the captain subsequently announced that the engine had been shut down with the engine's fire extinguisher having been activated.

The airline reported the crew shut one of the engines down due to mechanical issues.

The flight was cancelled, the passengers rebooked onto flights the following day.
