A Lufthansa Boeing 747-400, registration D-ABVU performing flight LH-493 from Vancouver,BC (Canada) to Frankfurt/Main (Germany), was enroute at FL350 near Greenland (Greenland) when the captain, pilot monitoring, became ill and needed to leave the cockpit. The senior first officer took the left hand seat and continued as pilot monitoring, while the captain attempted to recover in the crew rest area. The flight was continued to Frankfurt, the captain recovered sufficiently to be able to return to the observer's seat about 90 minutes prior to landing and watched the remainder of the flight. The first officer landed the aircraft safely, the senior first officer taxied the aircraft to the apron.

On Jun 23rd 2015 Germany's BFU reported in their February Bulletin that the BFU have opened an investigation into the occurrence rated a serious incident.
