A Commutair de Havilland Dash 8-200 on behalf of United, registration N363PH performing flight UA-4770 from Newark,NJ to Rochester,NY (USA) with 37 passengers and 3 crew, was descending through about 6000 feet towards Rochester about 20nm southeast of Rochester when the crew donned their oxygen masks, declared PAN reporting smoke in the cockpit, approach control inquired how much runway was needed and advised Canandaigua Airport (FAA Code D38) featuring 5500 feet of runway was available 5nm to their south, no response from the crew, approach queried "do you want me to shut down or are you able to speak", crew accepted Canandaigua and was vectored for an approach to runway 13, where the aircraft landed safely 4 minutes after declaring PAN. The aircraft stopped on the runway, the aircraft was evacuated. No injuries occurred.

The passengers were taken to Rochester by road.

Local emergency services reported, a flight attendant also observed smoke in a lavatory and discharged two fire extinguishers into the lavatory and closed the door. The smoke was electrical in nature. The cause of the smoke is under investigation. Emergency services actually arrived after all emergency doors had already been opened and all occupants had evacuated the aircraft.
