A United Boeing 737-800, registration N24202 performing flight UA-1496 from New York La Guardia,NY to Chicago O'Hare,IL (USA), was climbing out of La Guardia's runway 13 when the crew of another aircraft reported seeing fluid leaking from the left hand engine. UA-1496 stopped the climb at 5000 feet and returned to La Guardia for a safe landing on runway 22 about 12 minutes after departure.

The FAA reported the source of the fluid leaking is under investigation.

A replacement Boeing 737-900 registration N69835 reached Chicago with a delay of 6.5 hours.
