A JAL Japan Airlines Boeing 777-200, registration JA008D performing flight JL-521 from Tokyo Haneda to Sapporo (Japan) with 228 passengers and 11 crew, was climbing through about FL300 out of Tokyo's Haneda Airport when the right hand engine (PW4077) emitted a loud bang prompting the crew to stop the climb about 140nm north of Haneda Airport and return to Haneda Airport for a safe landing on runway 34R about 50 minutes after departure.

Japanese media report that debris off the right hand engine were found near Yonezawa about 140nm north of Haneda Airport.
