The airline confirmed the aircraft momentarily lost traction while turning off the runway at low speed and crossed an area of grass for a short time. The aircraft underwent a thorough inspection but did not need any further engineering attention.
A passenger reported it was raining heavily. Touchdown and rollout appeared normal but then the aircraft felt like turning to the right but still going straight.
Ground observers reported the aircraft was attempting to turn off the runway onto taxiway E1 (at the very end of runway 29) at a rather high speed when the nose wheels appeared to skid on the sealed surface of the runway and the aircraft went off onto soft ground.
New Zealands Transport Accident Investigation Commission TAIC have opened an investigation into the occurrence.
The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground for about 92 hours and returned to service on Mar 10th.
