A Network Aviation Fokker 100 on behalf of Qantas, registration VH-NHK performing flight QF-1649 from Paraburdoo,WA to Perth,WA (Australia), was climbing out of Paraburdoo when a large bird impacted and penetrated the nose cone and caused substantial damage to nose and fuselage. The crew returned to Paraburdoo for a safe landing.

A replacement Fokker 100 registration VH-NHM was dispatched to Paraburdoo and reached Perth with a delay of 5.5 hours.

Observers reported an eagle or kite impacted and penetrated the aircraft at the nose cone and became embedded into the fuselage causing substantial damage to the aircraft.
