A SAA South African Airways Airbus A340-300, registration ZS-SXC performing flight SA-203 from Johannesburg (South Africa) to Dakar (Senegal), was enroute at FL360 about 1.5 hours into the flight when the crew decided to return to Johannesburg due to a hydraulic problem. The crew dumped fuel, then needed to perform an alternate gear extension and landed safely back on Johannesburg's runway 03R about 3.5 hours after departure. The aircraft was towed off the runway.

A replacement Airbus A340-300 registration ZS-SXE departed Johannesburg for Dakar and further New York JFK,NY (USA) as flight SA-9203 the following morning and is estimated to reach Dakar with a delay of 18 hours.

The occurrence aircraft was able to resume service after about 18 hours on the ground.
