An Alitalia Airbus A319-100, registration EI-IMR performing flight AZ-1198 from Reggio Calabria to Milan Linate (Italy), was accelerating for takeoff through a flock of seagulls, a number of birds impacted the aircraft prompting the crew to reject takeoff at high speed. The aircraft slowed safely and returned to the apron.

A replacement Airbus A319-100 registration EI-IMX reached Milan with a delay of 5.5 hours.

The occurrence aircraft was able to position to Rome Fiumicino as flight AZ-8800 about 6 hours after the rejected takeoff, remained on the ground in Rome for another 5.5 hours before resuming service.
