An Airlinair/Hop! Avions de Transport Regional ATR-72-212A on behalf of Air France, registration F-GRPI performing flight AF-7343 from Basel/Mulhouse (Switzerland/France) to Paris Orly (France) with 55 people on board, was in the initial climb out of Basel/Mulhouse when the right hand engine (PW127) failed prompting the crew to stop the climb at 4000 feet, shut the engine down and return to Basel/Mulhouse for a safe landing about 15 minutes after departure.

The flight was cancelled.

The aircraft is still on the ground in Mulhouse 48 hours after landing back.

On Jan 19th 2015 The Aviation Herald learned that sparks had been observed by ground witnesses, parts of the engine were found on the runway. The engine is being replaced, the power turbine has been severly damaged.
