A United Boeing 737-800, registration N76515 performing flight UA-1596 from Sacramento,CA to Denver,CO (USA) with 129 passengers and 6 crew, was climbing out of Sacramento's runway 34R when the right hand engine (CFM56) ingested a number of birds causing repeated bangs and streaks of flames from the engine. The crew shut the engine down, stopped the climb at 5000 feet and returned to Sacramento for a safe landing on runway 16R about 25 minutes after departure.

Emergency Services reported the engine ingested multiple birds.
