A Cityjet Avro RJ-85, registration EI-RJI performing flight WX-281 from London City,EN (UK) to Florence (Italy), was in the initial climb out of London City Airport's runway 27 when a flaps fairing on the left hand wing partially detached dangling off the wing kept in place by the forward attachment only. The aircraft stopped the climb at 3000 feet and returned to London City Airport for a safe landing on runway 27 about 20 minutes after departure.

A replacement Avro RJ-85 registration EI-RJF reached Florence with a delay of 2:45 hours.

The airline confirmed "the cover of the operating mechanism on the wing became partially detached" on departure from London City. Following consultation with Cityjet's Maintenance the aircraft decided to return to London City Airport. The passengers departed on another aircraft.
