Passenger photo (Photo: Mutadi Abdullah)A Sriwijaya Boeing 737-400, registration PK-CJV performing flight SJ-188 from Jakarta to Pontianak (Indonesia) with 163 passengers and 6 crew, landed on Pontianak's runway 15 in heavy rain at 12:10L (05:10Z) but veered left off the runway and came to a stop with all gear on soft ground resting on belly and engines, the right hand flaps being damaged. No injuries occurred, the aircraft received substantial damage.

Passengers reported the approach just prior to touch down had been turbulent, the aircraft touched down and a few seconds later began to drift before veering left and stopping off the runway, the aircraft was evacuated. The right hand wing received damage, it is unclear whether the main gear struts collapsed or just sunk into soft ground.

The airport remained closed until 18:00L (11:00Z) on Saturday (Jun 2nd) until the aircraft had been removed and the runway had been cleaned 30 hours after the incident, however, many flights were already cancelled for Saturday. The traffic is expected to normalize during Sunday (Jun 3rd).

The airport reported an excavator and cranes capable of lifting 150 tons were necessary to dig the aircraft (reported landing weight 34 tons) out and get it back onto paved surface. Following successful release of the aircraft by 15:00L it took 3 more hours to clean the runway and ensure all airport facilities were operative and airport operation was safe. The aircraft suffered a collapsed nose gear, both main gear struts sunk into soft ground until the aircraft came to rest on the belly and engines. At the time of the accident winds were blowing at 16 knots and the runway was "drenched" as result of heavy rain.

On Jun 5th the airport reported the aircraft had been taken to a hangar where it is going to be inspected by Indonesia's NTSC before the airline will take decisions on how to proceed with the aircraft. The spokesman added, he personally heard a loud noise on Jun 1st and after he located the origin of the noise he saw the Boeing 737 skid.

The airline reported the aircraft was flown by a very senior captain with more than 25,000 hours of experience. The captain had been off duty for two weeks prior to the accident flight.

Indonesia's NTSC is investigating.

Indonesia's Ministry of Transport confirmed the Boeing 737-400 PK-CJV landed on runway 15 in heavy rain and skidded left off the runway resulting in a collapsed nose gear, the main gear sinking into the soft ground and the engines making contact with the ground as a result.
