A replacement Airbus A319-100 registration D-AGWD positioned from Cologne (Germany) to Naples as flight 4U-6901 and performed the return flight 4U-3863 reaching Hanover with a delay of 11 hours.
A passenger on the return flight said the return flight's captain announced the originally assigned aircraft had received a lightning strike inbound to Naples and had not been released to service again. Earlier passengers had been told the incoming aircraft had suffered a bird strike, the captain denied that information in his announcement explicitely stating there had been no bird strike.
The incident aircraft positioned to Cologne the following day as flight 4U-6900 departing Naples about 27 hours after landing and resumed service on May 28th about 48 hours after landing in Naples.
