An Expressjet Canadair CRJ-200 on behalf of United, registration N820AS performing flight XE-5740/UA-5740 from Greenville,SC to Washington Dulles,DC (USA) with 40 people on board, was climbing out of Greenville when an engine made strange sounds and an engine oil indication illuminated prompting the crew to level off at 9000 feet and return to Greenville for a safe landing about 20 minutes after departure.

The flight was cancelled.

The airline confirmed an oil warning light illuminated prompting the crew to return to Greenville.
