A Lufthansa Cargo McDonnell Douglas MD-11, registration D-ALCC performing freight flight LH-8188 from Frankfurt/Main (Germany) to Chicago O'Hare,IL (USA), was enroute at FL320 about 400nm westnorthwest of Shannon (Ireland) when the crew declared emergency reporting electrical problems, decided to turn around and received vectors direct to Strumble,WL (UK, STU VOR) keeping all options open for a diversion to Shannon, Dublin, the UK or return to Frankfurt. After working the checklists the crew decided to return to Frankfurt and set course towards Frankfurt. While back over Ireland the crew cancelled their emergency status and continued to Frankfurt for a safe landing on runway 07R about 140 minutes after turning around at about 03:30L (01:30Z) during night curfew.

The flight was cancelled.

The incident aircraft was able to resume service about 24 hours later.
