A Lufthansa Airbus A320-200, registration D-AIPW performing flight LH-1232 from Frankfurt/Main (Germany) to Vienna (Austria), was climbing out of Frankfurt's runway 18 when the crew stopped the climb at 2500 feet stating they needed to return immediately. Air Traffic Control pulled all aircraft on approaches to 25L and 25C off the approaches to accomodate the obvious emergency, the aircraft was cleared for an ILS approach to runway 25C and, still on departure frequency, cleared to land on runway 25C. The aircraft stopped on the runway, emergency services attended the aircraft, the crew advised oil fumes were detected shortly after becoming airborne, an evacuation was being considered. About 5 minutes after landing emergency services and crew agreed that no evacuation was needed, the aircraft vacated the runway and the airport returned to normal operation clearing the holds that had been filled with aircraft in the meantime.

A replacement Airbus A321-200 registration D-AISJ reached Vienna with a delay of 2 hours.
