An Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 757-200, registration ET-ALZ performing flight ET-703 from Rome Fiumicino (Italy) to Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) with 135 people on board, was enroute at FL350 about 140nm eastnortheast of Malta (Malta) when the crew reported the right hand engine (PW2037) had been secured and decided to divert to Malta drifting down to FL240. The crew requested emergency services on stand by and advised they were not yet sure about whether they needed to stop on the runway or could vacate the runway, subsequently the crew requested a lower altitude to drift down to. The aircraft drifted down to FL150 and landed safely on Malta's runway 31 about 40 minutes after leaving FL350. The aircraft taxied to the apron without stop.

The aircraft was able to depart again after about 10 hours on the ground and reached Addis Ababa with a delay of 11 hours.
