A British Airways Boeing 747-400, registration G-CIVD performing flight BA-55 from London Heathrow,EN (UK) to Johannesburg (South Africa), was enroute at FL330 about 290nm southeast of Algiers (Algeria) when the aircraft drifted down to FL260 due to engine (RB211) trouble. The aircraft turned around and returned to London for a safe landing on runway 27L about 2.5 hours later.

A replacement Boeing 747-400 registration G-BNLV departed London the following day and is estimated to reach Johannesburg with a delay of 24 hours.

The incident aircraft is still on the ground about 22 hours after landing.
