A Canadian North Boeing 737-200, registration C-GOPW performing flight 5T-438 from Rankin Inlet,NU to Iqaluit,NU (Canada) with 41 people on board, was climbing out of Rankin Inlet when the crew received indication that the left hand engine's (JT8D) starter valve had opened. The crew worked the relevant checklist, shut the engine down and returned to Rankin Inlet. The aircraft entered a hold to burn off fuel and landed safely about 35 minutes after the engine was shut down.

The Canadian TSB reported that maintenance found a clamp securing ducting upstream of the starter valve had broken. The clamp was replaced, an overweight landing inspection conducted and ground runs without anomalies performed.
