An American Airlines Boeing 777-200, registration N782AN performing flight AA-187 (dep Jun 3rd) from Chicago O'Hare,IL (USA) to Beijing (China) with 245 people on board, was descending towards Beijing at around 22:20L (14:20Z), about 30 minutes behind schedule despite departure on time, when the crew declared emergency due to being low on fuel. At the time thunderstorms were approaching the aerodrome, the crew aborted the descent at about FL120 and decided to divert to Tianjin (China) about 70nm southeast of Beijing. However, when the aircraft approached Tianjin the thunderstorm front had reached the aerodrome, too, forcing the crew to abort the approach and divert to Shijiazhuang (China) about 140nm westsouthwest of Tianjin, where the aircraft landed safely.

On Jul 17th 2013 the NTSB reported that China's Civil Aviation Authority opened an investigation into the occurrence rated an incident.

The incident aircraft reached Beijing about 7 hours after aborting the approach.
