A Qatar Airways Airbus A330-300, registration A7-AEF performing flight QR-553 from Tunis (Tunisia) to Doha (Qatar), was climbing through FL190 about 70nm eastsoutheast of Tunis and in contact with Malta Air Traffic Control, when the crew declared emergency reporting left hand engine (CF6) problems, stopped the climb and set course to return to Tunis. The crew advised they needed no assistance on the ground, entered a hold and landed safely on Tunis' runway 29 about 35 minutes after stopping the climb.

The flight was cancelled.
