A passenger reported that he was sitting in a seat row where the sounds of the main gear actuators would definitely be heard, however, during climb out no sounds of the gear retracting were heard whatsoever. Soon enough the crew announced that the gear could not be retracted and they needed to return. The passenger had the impression that the nose gear was deliberately held airborne as long as possible during the very smooth landing. The passengers were asked to wait in their seats in the aircraft while maintenance checked the aircraft. After a while the captain appeared in the cabin and announced that maintenance had reviewed the aircraft, one of two computers controlling the landing gear had jumped out of its sockets and therefore had physically disconnected. A maintenance team came on board and worked for about 30 minutes, then a number of alarms, bells etc. started, cabin lights behaved erratic, air conditioning and other systems became erratic too. The captain announced: "there is this electronic component that is being naughty and the aircraft systems are shedding false alarms".
A replacement A320-200 registration EC-LLJ reached Rome with a delay of 5:10 hours.
The incident aircraft was able to resume service about 8 hours after landing.
