A Lufthansa Airbus A340-600, registration D-AIHM performing flight LH-412 from Munich (Germany) to Newark,NJ (USA), was enroute at FL340 about 25nm soutwest of Cologne (Germany) and 250nm northwest of Munich when the crew was informed that debris of a tyre had been found on the departure runway 26R, which were identified to belong to D-AIHM. The crew decided to return to Munich for a safe landing on runway 26R about 110 minutes after departure.

A replacement Airbus A340-600 registration D-AIHS reached Newark with a delay of 7 hours.

The airline confirmed the crew of an aircraft landing on 26R some time after LH-412 saw the debris on the runway, the debris was collected and identified to belong to D-AIHM, the crew was informed and decided to return as a precaution to have the tyre replaced at the home base in Munich even though continuation of the flight to Newark would have been possible.
