Expressjet CRJ2 near Washington and New York on Mar 19th 2013, severe turbulence, engine failure

An Expressjet Canadair CRJ-200 on behalf of United, flight EV-5714/UA-5714 from Washington Dulles,DC to New York JFK,NY (USA), had just reached cruise altitude 17,000 feet when the aircraft deviated from assigned altitude, the crew reported severe to extreme turbulence and apologized for the altitude deviation. The aircraft passed through the weather front, then started the descent towards New York. While descending through 4000 feet on vectors for final approach an engine failed prompting the crew to abort the approach and enter a hold attempting to restart the engine. The attempt to relight the engine failed, the crew continued for a safe landing on JFK's runway 31L about 20 minutes after the engine failure.

A passenger reported the crew announced they had encountered severe clear air turbulence shortly after departure from Washington. Later in the flight, Long Island just came into view, the crew announced an engine had flamed out, they were entering a hold in order to restart the engine. The restart however failed and the crew continued for landing at JFK instructing the passengers to assume brace positions.
