An Air Greenland de Havilland Dash 8-200, registration OY-GRG performing flight GL-3401 from Nuuk to Narsasuaq (Greenland), was climbing through 7000 feet out of Nuuk's runway 04 when the crew noticed the smell of burning rubber, soon followed by smoke and flames visible from the right hand windshield terminal block. The crew switched off the windshield heat, which extinguished the flames and stopped the sparks. However, due to residual smoke the crew donned their oxygen masks, stopped the climb at 9000 feet and returned to Nuuk for a safe landing on runway 04 about 20 minutes after departure.

The Danish Havarikommissionen (HCL) rated the occurrence a serious incident and opened an investigation and stated, that the investigation identified the RH windshield as the source of a short circuit. The short circuit led to overheating and melting of the RH windshield terminal block. The “Windshield R/H Heat” 115V Circuit Breaker was found popped during the event.
