An ITA Trasporto Aereo Airbus A330-900, registration EI-HJO performing flight AZ-609 (dep Apr 5th) from New York JFK,NY (USA) to Rome Fiumicino (Italy) with 217 people on board, was enroute at FL390 about 110nm west of Genoa (Italy) when the crew decided to divert to Genoa for a safe landing on runway 28 about 35 minutes later.

The airline reported a technical issue, the captain decided to divert to Genoa as a precaution.

Italian media report about a possible fuel issue remaining unclear whether it was a real issue or just an indication problem.

The passengers were rebooked onto other flights from Bologna, Milan Linate and other airports and were bussed to those airports.

The aircraft remained on the ground in Genoa for about 11 hours, then positioned to Rome and returned to service the following day.
