A United Boeing 777-200, registration N74007 performing flight UA-949 from London Heathrow,EN (UK) to San Francisco,CA (USA) with 162 passengers and 12 crew, was enroute at FL340 over the Atlantic Ocean about 360nm northwest of Edinburgh,SC (UK) when the crew decided to turn around and divert to Edinburgh due to a burning odour on board. The aircraft landed safely on Edinburgh's runway 06 about one hour after turning around.

The airline reported the aircraft diverted to Edinburgh due to a burning smell on board, the passengers were taken to hotels and rebooked onto other flights.

The aircraft remained on the ground in Edinburgh for about 52 hours, then positioned to San Francisco and returned to service.
