A Lufthansa Boeing 787-9, registration D-ABPR performing flight LH-500 from Frankfurt/Main (Germany) to Rio de Janeiro,RJ (Brazil), was enroute at FL360 about 550nm westsouthwest of Tenerife,CI (Spain) when the crew decided to return to Frankfurt. The aircraft landed safely back on Frankfurt's runway 25R about 5.5 hours after the decision to turn around.

The captain told the passenger that one of the windshield heating channels was not working, in consultation with dispatch and maintenance they concluded they could not continue the flight to Rio de Janeiro and would return to Frankfurt, which would take another about 5 hours. A replacement aircraft would be made ready.

A replacement Boeing 787-9 registration D-ABPA reached Rio de Janeiro with a delay of about 13 hours.
