A Lufthansa Airbus A340-300, registration D-AIGN performing flight LH-405 from New York JFK,NY (USA) to Frankfurt/Main (Germany), was enroute at FL350 over the Atlantic Ocean about 50nm east of Nantucket,MA (USA) when the crew requested to descend to FL290 reporting the failure of their engine #2 (inboard left hand engine, CFM56). The aircraft initially continued across the planned flight track while deciding whether to divert to Boston or JFK. About 15 minutes after requesting the descent to FL290 the crew decided to turn around and divert to New York. On final approach to JFK's runway 31L the crew reported another problem and initiated a missed approach. The aircraft maintained 2000 feet while the crew worked the related checklists, the crew subsequently announced they had solved that hydraulic problem for now and were ready for another approach. The aircraft landed safely on runway 31L about 2:10 hours after departure. The aircraft taxied to the apron.

The aircraft positioned to Frankfurt on May 15th 2025 and returned to service on May 18th 2025.

On May 21st 2025 the airline reported that the crew observed a significantly increased fuel consumption for one engine during the climb, in cruise then the engine failed, the crew returned to JFK. The engine was inspected, a control unit was found defective and was replaced, the aircraft is in service again.
